What is Personal Health Information Management?

As many of us walk through life we attempt to create order out of chaos with the goal of attaining some semblance of peace and tranquility. In Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography, he described 13 virtues with the third being “Order” which he admits gave him the most trouble. Franklin describes Order as “Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time. Organize your life; pay attention to ALL aspects of your work.” Franklin realized that creating order in his life gave him the necessary time to work on important projects such as his inventions. Where would we all be if he didn’t have time to perform his duties as a Founding Father? Fast forward, more than 200 hundred years later, even with all the technological advances many of us like Franklin have trouble mastering the virtue of order and creating a work life balance.

The intention of this blog is to support activities we, as individuals can perform to order our daily lives through the acquisition, organization, storage, maintenance, retrieval, and sharing of personal health information. These skills can be transferred to other aspects of personal information management (PIM). Personal health information management (PHIM) has been defined as an important aspect in healthcare consumerism where the individual plays a central role in the flow of their health information by using a collection of tools and technologies. With the adoption of consumer health IT and PHIM evidence suggest that individuals who actively engage in their health and well-being will experience a higher percentage of positive health outcomes. PHIM helps empower the healthcare consumer by increasing their health literacy resulting in becoming an active participant in the health care decision making process.

Today’s healthcare consumers are saddled with common challenges of PHIM including navigating a complex and fragmented healthcare system. Healthy people visit their Primary Care Physician (PCP) on a national average of three to four times a year including well-care visits. Well-care visits include screenings and immunizations which is an imperative function to early detection and prevention of disease. The optimal time for health care consumers to implement a strategic plan in collecting, organizing, and storing their medical documents is when they are healthy and of sound mind. When an individual or loved one is diagnosed with a life-threatening disease such as cancer the patient will receive a primary intervention such as a surgical procedure then followed up with a combination of long term outpatient care such as chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and additional diagnostic procedures. During this time, which could last for months or possibly years the patient or their caregiver will be required to manage vast amounts of health information coming from many different health disciplines and organizations which may be unfamiliar to them. This is also a very stressful time when the patient may be experiencing cognitive issues, anxiety, and depression making processing new information difficult. Being prepared and organized prior to a health crises will help relieve some of the stress that is experienced during these traumatic times.

In my next article, I will cover the topic of cybersecurity and give a road map on how to create strong passwords that are easy to remember. This skill is a very important aspect of PHIM and should be put into practice prior to storing sensitive and private health information. Passwords are the first line of defense against security intrusions. So, I hope you follow along with me and try like Benjamin Franklin to master the virtue of order.

India Increases Investments in solar power, green corridor on government’s energy radar for 2017

Green seems to be the catchword for the Indian government heading into the next year as it gears up to achieve 175 gigawatt of clean energy by 2022 through auction of 1,000 MW of rooftop solar power, Rs 13,000 crore investment in solar parks and a Rs 21,000-crore package to boost local manufacturing of panels.

By all yardsticks, 2016 remains a watershed year when solar tariff slumped to Rs 4 per unit and wind projects received a major thrust. The government is set to switch gears in 2017 to make India a hub for one of the largest installations of clean energy sources by 2022.

Minister for New and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal offered a glimpse of things to come while speaking to PTI. Scaling up of rooftop solar programme, scheme to encourage domestic manufacturing of solar panels and making wind power affordable through auction of sites all fill up a packed 2017.

His ministry has in its sight Rs 1 lakh crore investment for the sector and is looking at 20 GW of power generation from non-conventional sources in 2017-18.

Beginning with speeding up the tempo for solar panel installation at homes, schools and hospitals through subsidies in 2016, plans are afoot to expand the rooftop programme to government buildings by providing target-based incentives.

In the November auction of 500 MW, subsidies for installation of as much as 432.7 MW of rooftop solar capacity were lapped up by 122 developers. A fresh tender for one gigawatt (1,000 MW) is now in the works.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is eyeing generation of 100 GW from solar power alone by 2022. Rooftop solar capacity almost doubled to 1,000 MW in 2016 and the aim is to take this to 40 GW.

Also on the table is a green corridor to transmit 2,000 MW of power from 34 solar panels across 21 states.

For good measure, Goyal said, a scheme to promote domestic manufacturing of solar panels will become a reality in 2017. The Rs 21,000-crore module aims to create 5 GW of photovoltaic manufacturing capacity by 2019 and 20 GW by 2026.

India’s renewable energy generation capacity stands at 45 GW.

According to Goyal, wind power is up next after successful reduction in solar tariff through transparent auction of sites. A mobility scheme is on the anvil to achieve 100 per cent electric vehicle-based transportation for India by 2030, he said without giving out specifics.

Early next year, the ministry will organize Global RE- Invest 2017 India-ISA Partnership, the second edition of the biennial Renewable Energy Investors Meet and Expo to bring in investors. The event will build on RE-Invest 2015 and explore the advances to help meet India’s ultimate target of adding 175 GW renewable energy capacity by 2022.

The ministry is keen on fostering competition among players, particularly in the wind energy space, to bring down tariff and make it a viable source of electricity for consumers.

The Global Renewable Energy Investors meet is the world’s largest renewable energy investors gathering to be organized in 2017, Goyal said.

He spoke of launching renewable energy fund under the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF). The ministry has been working on this USD 2-billion fund to make private players invest in the sector.

In 2017-18, the government is eyeing 20,450 MW power capacity addition from renewables, including 15,000 (solar), 4,600 MW (wind), 750 MW (biomass) and 100 MW from small hydro power (of up to 25 MW).

A total of 7,518 MW of grid-connected power generation capacity from renewable sources has been added this year (January to October 2016).

In 2016-17, a total of 1,502 MW capacity has come on board till October-end this year, making a cumulative realization of 28,279 MW. Now, in terms of wind power installed capacity, India is placed at the 4th rank after China, the US and Germany.

As for solar power, a total of 1,750 MW capacity has been added till October-end this year, making it a cumulative 8,728 MW.

After bringing solar tariff to a record low of Rs 3 per unit, the minister indicated making wind power affordable.

He said, “There will be a wind auction to transparently reduce the tariff.”

The government has planned solar energy from every roof in the country and there will be expansion of rooftop solar programs next year. It has envisaged 40 GW of solar power from rooftop alone out of the total 100 GW planned to be added by 2022.

This flows from the need to push rooftop solar in a big way against the backdrop of a target of 40 GW grid connected solar rooftops by 2022. So far, about 500 MW of rooftop solar has been installed and about 3,000 MW has been sanctioned for installation.

All major sectors like the Railways, airport, hospitals, educational institutions, government buildings of central, state and PSUs are being targeted, besides the private sector.

A massive Grid Connected Solar Rooftop Programme will be launched with 40 GW target. State Electricity Regulatory Commissions of 30 states/UTs notified regulations for net-metering and feed-in-tariff mechanism. Besides, funding of Rs 5,000 crore was approved for solar rooftops.

A total sanction of USD 1,300 million has been received from the World Bank, KFW, ADB and NDB which will enable SBI, PNB, Canara Bank and IREDA to fund such projects at an interest rate of less than 10 per cent.

The ministry has tied up with ISRO for geo-tagging of all the rooftop plants using ISRO’s VEDAS portal.

To reduce import of solar equipment from other countries, particularly from China, the ministry is keen to encourage domestic production to meet the huge power demand.

The minister said there will be a focus on Make in India for solar power next year and a scheme to this effect may be launched. The government has also planned launch of founding conference of International Solar Alliance.

About use of renewable in farm sector, he said, “We will focus on Prosperous Farmer — Pollution Free India. There will be scheme for Bio-mass like rice husk utilisation next year.”

Major programmes such as implementation of solar parks, Solar Defence Scheme, have been launched during the past two years.

The increased use of indigenous renewable resources is expected to reduce India’s dependence on expensive imported fossil fuel.

Most viral Facebook recipes are too gross to eat

A few days ago, PopSugar’s food blog shared a Facebook video recipe for “Wine and Cheese Shots.” It sounds bad even before you know the worst part: the shot glasses are made of cheese. All you do is melt a bunch of cheddar cheese, scoop the gooey mess into a shot glass mold, and then just let the mold sit for half an hour until the melted cheese coagulates into something resembling a solid. Finally, you pour wine into your warm cheesy vessels. Enjoy!

As Vanity Fair reporter Maya Kosoff rightly pointed out, this is disgusting. Are you supposed to drink the wine first and then gnaw on your reanimated waxy chunk? If you’re making these for a party, won’t the cheese start to sweat and fold in on itself as the shots sit for hours on the snack table? For that matter, is gripping a cylinder of cheese in your clammy paw supposed to be a pleasant party sensation? Then there’s the small issue that perhaps no one wants their wine to taste like it’s been soaked in microwaved cheddar.

PopSugar Food‘s readers weren’t too thrilled with the recipe either. More than one person commented, “This is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen.” Some called it an insult to wine and cheese lovers; others wondered if it was the deranged fantasy of an inventive stoner.

But even as Facebook users lambasted the video as the final Jenga piece in the wobbly tower of true culinary innovation, it seemed like they couldn’t look away from it. There are almost 13,000 comments on the clip, and even though almost every single one is negative, that’s still about 13,000 more comments (give or take a handful) than a PopSugar Food video usually gets. “Wine and Cheese Shots” has 1.8 million views while similar videos on the site’s Facebook page have just tens of thousands.

Still, only a very small number of those viewers (if any) will likely end up heading out to the store to buy some Extra Sharp and a shot glass mold. That’s because recipes like these — short and simple, but hacky enough to dazzle your friends — are meant to be shared, not literally consumed. These videos are either intentionally unappetizing, like the cheese shots or Food Network’s edible candle video, or absurd, like Tasty’s Cheeseburger Onion Rings and Guacamole Onion Rings. The recipes themselves are created to disgust or to awe, but not to motivate.

Truth is What Gets the Most Likes and Retweets

Is this real or an illlusion? It’s is as real as you perceive it to be.
Thoughts on Truth and Facts from Scott Galloway

You could argue that with social media, the truth is now what we all agree it is.  Whatever gets the most likes or whatever seems to get the most user reviews that say “I agree” suddenly becomes accepted wisdom or accepted expertise.

And there’s probably a certain amount of skepticism around the traditional experts, around the traditional gatekeepers, that is warranted, especially in traditional media.  You sed to put out a press release and hope that the gatekeeper found your product or your story worthwhile.  Now it’s the end consumer that decides that this product, this movie review or your views on social media or on architecture or lighting are worth sharing.

Now, there’s been some blow back.  There’s a general feeling that among blogs, some of it isn’t as well researched, is not as thoughtful and there isn’t as much fact-checking going on.  And I think there’s a decent amount of validity to that.  There seems to be a healthy tension.  Some of the truly outstanding brands — The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, take tremendous pride in the fact-checking and the credibility behind everything they write.  There’s absolutely a market for that.

There also seems to be a market for just bright people who are willing to share their opinions and do it at a very low cost.  So one is not going to supplant the other, but you didn’t have this before.  And it’s changing the ecosystem.

So, what is credibility?  To a certain extent, it’s being reshaped around what we as a general population find it to be. And we’re losing faith and taking power away from the tastemakers, if you will, or the traditional arbiters of credibility, be they a talking head on a Sunday morning show or the Business Editor at The Wall Street Journal.  Consumers are saying, “I don’t necessarily need that person to take my message forward and find out if the general population finds me and/or my message credible.”
